You must first pass a written test to get your driver’s license. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires all applicants for a learner’s permit or driver’s license to complete a written test and vision screening. If you are under 18 years old or have no driving experience, you must take both tests: the written and vision screening.

You can get a full driver’s license at age 16, but you must start taking lessons and passing tests before that.
You will be able to get your provisional license at 17 years old if:

If you’re 16 years old or 17 years old and are not eligible for a provisional license yet, but still want to get behind the wheel of your car without having to wait until age 18 (the minimum age required by law), then you can take steps toward obtaining your first license.
